Summer is here! There's nothing better than kicking off the season by celebrating the summer solstice and enjoying the night of San Juan: the shortest and most magical night of the year. The festivities of San Juan or the Bonfires of San Juan are celebrated all over Comunitat Valenciana. We will give you some ideas of where to celebrate them with your family.

The night of San Juan is a night of traditions. Jumping over the bonfire, going round the fire, jumping the waves and asking for a wishing .... It is a magical night to celebrate the arrival of summer with the family, with music, firework displays, parades, exhibitions and bonfires. It is held on 23 June.

Where to celebrate San Juan's Eve in the Province of Castellón

You can enjoy the festivities of San Juan in the city of Castellón with bonfires on the Gurugú Beach and the Parque Litoral de Castelló. The ‘Encuentro de Bestias de Fuego’ and the fireworks display combine fire, music, dance and pyrotechnics, which together with the characters known as ‘Dimonis’, create a magical atmosphere in the open air. There will also be a ‘Coques de Sant Joan’ competition, a ‘sobaquillo’ dinner and, of course, bonfires.

Alcossebre has prepared, for the night of San Juan, an evening in which, in addition to the burning of the traditional bonfire, we can enjoy entertainment with batukada, fire show and a great fireworks display at midnight.

Oropesa del Mar Oropesa del Mar celebrates the Night of San Juan with ‘correfocs’, the distribution of coca and mistela, and the burning of the bonfire by the sea. On the 28th of June, the night of the feast of St. Peter is celebrated with the traditional distribution of ‘Coca de San Pedro’ and muscatel wine to all the participants.

On the beaches of Benicàssim , folkloric dances, parades, distribution of typical sweets and muscatel, bonfires, fireworks and lots of music await you on this magical night.

In Peñíscola , bonfires are lit on the south beach, fireworks are set off, habaneras are sung and everyone can dip their feet in the waves.

In Cullera, on the night of 23rd to 24th June, thousands of people go to the beach to light bonfires to celebrate the festival of San Juan and perform the traditional rituals: jumping the 7 waves, burning wishes in the bonfire to make them come true, bathing at midnight in the sea... A celebration that begins with the Plantà de la Hoguera in Avda. Blasco Ibañez, with various activities such as popular dances, mascletà, fireworks, distribution of lemon water and ‘coca de llimonà’.

 

Where to celebrate the Night of San Juan in the province of Alicante

This year, Xàbia celebrates its Fogueres de Sant Joan from 7 to 24 June. These are dates when Xàbia is filled with music, colour and joy, in a very varied programme of festivities that includes, among others, parades, musical performances, concerts, flower offerings... 

Furthermore, on 23rd June you can enjoy the Nit dels Focs’ in Xàbia, declared a Festival of Local Tourist Interest in Comunitat Valenciana, which starts at 23:30h. It begins with the ‘cremà dels focs’ (burning of the bonfires) at the points where the gates of the old city walls used to be. The night ends with a spectacular ‘correfocs’ (fire run) that runs along the town's ring roads, which correspond to the old layout of what used to be the walled town.

Calpe invites you on 23rd June to celebrate the shortest night of the year with a sobaquillo dinner, orchestra and fireworks on the Arenal-Bol beach. 

The 24th of June is the day of San Juan, and in his honour the festivities are celebrated in the Raval neighbourhood in Elche.. It is traditional to plant a large bonfire and several small ones around the Church of San Juan. Come and enjoy the sopar de cabasset, the banyaeta, performances, open-air dances as well as the processions and religious events. The night of San Juan is the cremà of the bonfires.

In Benidorm, you can also enjoy with Hogueras de San Juan of the neighbourhoods of Mercado, La Cala and El Campo are planted and burnt on the night of the 24th of June. However, on the night of the 23rd June, on the Levante and Poniente beaches, the night of San Juan is celebrated by jumping the waves.

In El Campello this tradition has been celebrated since time immemorial, when families would come to the beaches with their baskets of food and splints to burn any bad memories they wanted to forget in a bonfire. Nowadays, it is still celebrated with bonfires in designated areas on the beach.

Every year, the old town of Altea joins in the celebrations of the fiestas of San Juan. They coincide with the summer solstice. Here, traditionally, they start with the ringing of the bells and the Entrà de la murta. From then on, various festive and religious events follow one after the other, filling the streets of Altea with joy. On the night of the 23rd, the celebration moves to the beach where bad omens are scared away by burning bonfires and jumping the waves at midnight.
