The city of Elche is a popular family tourism destination in the Region of Valencia.
Did you know that the city of Elx (or Elche) has received three UNESCO international distinctions? The first for its Palm Grove, the second for the Misteri de Elx, and the third for the Center for Traditional Culture-School Museum of Pusol. In this post we are going to have a closer look at these interesting sites and other things to do with kids in Elche.
1. Explore the Palm Grove
The Palm Grove is formed by the palm orchards of Elche. It is the largest Palm Grove in Europe, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. A fund activity for the whole family is to look go on a scavanger hunt with kids. At the tourist info of Eclhe you can obtain a map (which you can download right here or buy for 1 euro). The map will take you on a tour of Elche ,and wile looking for dragons, you will visit the Palms Gorve and the most emblematic places of Elche
2. Get to know the "El Misteri d’ Elx"
Every August, the representation of El Misteri d ’Elx takes place: a sacred lyrical drama about death, the Assumption and the Coronation of the Virgin. A play that has been represented without interruption since the mid-15th century in the Basilica of Santa María and in the streets of the city of Elche.
It constitutes a living testimony of medieval European religious theater and devotion to the Virgin. This sung theatrical representation consists of two acts that are performed on August 14 and 15.
More than 300 volunteers participate each year in the performance as actors, singers, stage directors, stage hands, seamstresses and mayors.
3. Visit the Pusol School Museum in Elche
This innovative educational project was implemented in the rural public school of Pusol (Elche, Spain) in 1969. Guided by teachers and external collaborators, the children explored, in a playful environment, the rich heritage of Elche.
The project has trained almost 500 schoolchildren and has resulted in a school museum with more than 100,000 items from all ethnological aspects: agriculture, commerce, industry, folklore, traditions ... When you are in Elche, the museum is well worth a visit.
4. A day out at Río Safari Elche
Río Safari Elche is an animal conservation center located on the Elche-Santa Pola Highway that is home to different species of animals from all over the world. It is an ideal place to spend a day, getting to know the different animals.
5. Get on board the Tourist Train
A good way to get to know the city of Elche with children is with the tourist train, the kids will love it. During the 40-minute tour you will visit the most emblematic areas of the city: the Municipal Park, part of the historic center and the Ruta del Palmeral. The starting point is in front of the Tourist Office, next to the Municipal Park.
6. A (holi)day at La Marina Resort & Camping
Since there are so many things to do in Elche with children, you might want to stay for a weekend. One of the most impressive camping resorts in the Region of Valencia is based in Elche: the La Marina Resort. It has more than 430 pitches, 95 bungalows, 74 luxury villas and 1 premium villa. The resort is very close to the beaches of Elche, surrounded by nature and next to the beautiful wild beach of fine sand, awarded with the Blue Flag.
It also has the Aquamarina water park with slides, soft slopes, rapids ... The Lake Theme Pool is made up of different waterfalls, pools with hydromassage and a water bar.
7. Enjoy nature at the El Hondo Natural Park
El Hondo, shared by the towns of Elche and Crevillent, has been a natural park since 1988 and an ideal place to enjoy nature with children. There are different hiking trails that can be done with children. The yellow route, the red route and the blue route are short in distance and easy to follow as a family.
8. Let´s go the beach
Elche has 6 beaches to enjoy during sunny days. The Arenales del Sol beach for example is ideal to go with children. It has a long promenade, equipped with wooden walkways to access the shore.
