Every August, the representation of El Misteri d ’Elx takes place: a sacred lyrical drama about death, the Assumption and the Coronation of the Virgin. A play that has been represented without interruption since the mid-15th century in the Basilica of Santa María and in the streets of the city of Elche.

It constitutes a living testimony of medieval European religious theater and devotion to the Virgin. This sung theatrical representation consists of two acts that are performed on August 14 and 15.

More than 300 volunteers participate each year in the performance as actors, singers, stage directors, stage hands, seamstresses and mayors.
