Sundials

The historic center of Villena has a set of sundials that, due to their age and uniqueness, are a clear example of the richness and diversity of its historical heritage. Three of them are located in the Plaza de Santiago, two near the front of the Church of Santiago, one on the facade of the Municipal Palace and a fourth on the facade of the bell tower of the Church of Santa Maria.

The treasure of Villena

More than half a century ago a treasure was discovered in Villena. In fact, it is one of the most important treasures of European prehistory. It consists of sixty pieces of 23.5 carat gold, mostly bowls, bracelets, bottles, along with silver bottles, and an iron bracelet. The Treasure is on display at the José María Soler Archaeological Museum.

The Castle of Villena

The Castle of Villena is also known as the Castle of the Watchtower. It was built as a refuge for the Muslim population of Villena at the end of the 12th century.

The castle was taken by the Aragonese troops in 1240, but it took three attempts to take the fortress. It consists of a double walled enclosure, with the outer wall defended by twelve towers. It has a large four-story keep. It looks like a castle out of a fairy tale of knights and princesses, and touring it with children is an adventure!

For more information about opening hours and entrance fees, you can visit the website of Villena Tourism.

Villena, wine country

Villena is the town with the largest number of wineries in the province of Alicante. Villena has a group of modern wineries that produce excellent wines based on native grape varieties, such as Monastrell and incorporating others such as Cabernet Sauvignón or Merlot.

In addition, Villena produces Fondillón, a sweet and dense wine from Alicante. It is made with Monastrell grapes and is ideal to accompany desserts and sweets.
