More than half a century ago a treasure was discovered in Villena. In fact, it is one of the most important treasures of European prehistory. The Treasure is on display at the José María Soler Archaeological Museum.
The Castle of Villena
The Castle of Villena is also known as the Castle of the Watchtower. It was built as a refuge for the Muslim population of Villena at the end of the 12th century.
The castle was taken by the Aragonese troops in 1240, but it took three attempts to take the fortress. It consists of a double walled enclosure, with the outer wall defended by twelve towers. It has a large four-story keep. It looks like a castle out of a fairy tale of knights and princesses, and touring it with children is an adventure!
For more information about opening hours and entrance fees, you can visit the website of Villena Tourism.
