HIking with childrenin the Region of Valencia
The Region of Valencia has many hiking trails that are perfect for families with small children or those that like to explore with their baby. We warmly recommend these safe, fun and easy kid-friendly trails in different parts of the Region.
We always recommend bringing a sturdy stroller and a baby carrier when going for hikes with a baby.
1. Albufera Natural Park (Dehesa del Saler)
Most of the routes that the City Council of Valencia has signposted in the Albufera Natural Park are suitable to go with a stroller.
It is always a good idea to take a baby carrier with you as well, as some of the routes go through wooden walkways that are a bit "bumpy".
We recommend for example the Botanical route and the route of the Gola de Pujol, which are short, easy and beautiful at the same time. Enjoy the sea-breeze and the typical Mediterrenean plants and bushes on an easy stroll for the whole family.
2. Strolling through the Peñiscola Marshes
In the Marjal de Peñiscola (the marshes) we can follow a trail of wooden walkways through the wetlands. It is an ideal environment for bird watching, so don't forget to bting your binoculars.
The route can be accessed at several points. One of the entrances is on Avenida Pigmalión, and from there you can see two wasterways: Sèquia del Rei and the Sèquia Templera.
La Marjal is behind the North beach and you can find the route here.
3. Serra Gelada Natural Park: The Lighthouse of Albir
Another kid-friendly trail in the Region of Valencia can de found in Alfás del Pi, close to Benidorm. This trail is actually a small road closed to traffic by which you can access the Albir Lighthouse and the impressive cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The route is easy and very enjoyable for the whole family. It can be done on foot, by bike or scooter if the children are a little older.
Information boards along the route give facts and information about the environment, also in English, which makes the hike even more interesting.
On hot days we recommend you to bring hats, sunscreen and water, as there is no shade.
The route starts at the Information Point of Albir.
4.Trail of the Mills (Alborache)
The Trail of the Mills in Alborache (40 minutes by car from Valencia) is an easy trail to hike with kids that runs parallel to a river. It is a delight for children as there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy the water. The trail is 1700 meters long and has a recreational area with picnic tables and garbage bins. Along the river you will discover some old mills that are in disuse now. Many structures are maintained; some were restored in the form of dams, canalisations, and now they are part of the aquatic landscape of Alborache.
5. Discover a waterfall in Navajas (Castellon)
If you want to contemplate a beautiful and spectacular 60 meter-high waterfall with your family, we recommend this easy kid-friendly trail in Navajas.
You can start the trail at Calle Bajada de las Fuentes, where you can also park your car. From there you follow the road next to information center and within ten minutes you will reach the impressive waterfall, known as The Bride’s Leap. In summer, people love to come for a swim here.
6. The Chelva water route
With small children you can walk a small part of the Water Route in Chelva. You can start the walk from the recreational area of Los Molinos. You can follow the river until arriving to a small but beautiful beach called La Playeta. Great for a swim in summer, but also worth a visit if you don't plan on swimming.
Following the trail a bit longer you will cross the the Olinches tunnel, which is carved into the rock of the mountain. Don`t forget to bring a flashlight as the tunnel is quite dark. The trail will take you to the Fábrica de la Luz, where you can turn around retrace your steps.
7. The Natural Park of La Mata-Torrevieja
In the Natural Park of La Mata-Torrevieja we recommend the yellow route: An interpretive walk through the pine forest to the viewpoint. It is a trail that's adapted for people with reduced mobility and therefore very easy to do with a baby stroller.
In this itinerary you can enjoy the diverse ecosystems of the park.
8. La Vía Verde del Mar (Greenway of the Sea)
The Via Verde del Mar, an old railway converted into a hiking trail, between Benicássim and Oropesa del Mar. It is a 5.5 kilometer long trail that take syou along the coast, with great views over the Mediterrenean Sea and intersting historical watch towers and tunnels.
You can hike or bike part (or all) of the route with your family, enjoying the scenery. Whether by bike or on foot, it is a very charming route, ideal for families.
